The Role of Sense of Space in the Affixation ofLi (里) in Ancient Chinese

在古代汉语的"里"后缀化进程中,它的意义、功能至少发生了两次密切相关的变化:第一次是其由原始义引申出抽象义,功能由指向实物转变为指向位置,词性由普通名词转化为方位词;第二次是"里"的词汇义脱落,由方位词虚化成为构词的后缀。在这两个不同阶段,与"里"搭配成分的空间感对它的意义、功能的转变起了关键性的作用。

In the affixation of li(里) in ancient Chinese,there exist at least two closely related changes in its meaning and function.The first is the original meaning extending to abstract meaning,with its function from referring to real objects to position,its part of speech from general nouns to nouns of locality;the second is li(里)’s lexical semantic loss,with its grammaticalization from position word to a suffix.In the two processes,the sense of space of li(里) played a key role in its meaning and function change.
