To explore the connotation of ＂loss＂, the essay manages to confirm that ＂death＂ is actually the source of various losses in Jemubhai＇s life, by focusing on the metaphorical death of Jemubhai, as well as the death of his wife. Rather than accompany throughout the story of Jemubhai, the shade of death, looms large all along, sink- ing in with the reiteration of its cognates. ＂Death＂ is thus deduced as one of the themes in the novel, or, in other words, one aspect of the connotation of ＂loss＂.
