Analysis of the Cause Why Guizhou Education Pioneer Liu Guanli Initiated the Culture and Education

刘官礼是黔西南近代教育蓬勃兴起的最为主要的推手,他能够在文教事业上取得影响深远的功绩,首先取决于他在黔西南地区的至尊社会地位和政治权势及影响力。就其彼时的情形,主要有三个方面的内在原因:渊源有自的崇文心态,希望刘氏家族在文化上崛起;权力落空而名声补偿,寻求一种声望的转换;现实迫切的人才需要,求贤若渴的心理。

Liu Guanli is considered one of the most prominent figures in the rise of education in southwest Guizhou. His achievement in the development of education is first and foremost conditioned by his influential social and political status. Situated in the historical context, this paper argues that there are three major reasons behind Liu Guanli＇s investment in the local education： Strong family tradition values the importance of education, which motivated Liu to promote family prestige through education; Setback from political arena, looking for fame in an alternative channel; practical need for skilled and educated helpers.
