By dealing with some basic concepts which are concerned with the progressive aspect of the English verb,studying the essential grammatical meaning of this grammatical category,this paper makes a summary of the pragmatic functions and uses of the progressive aspect and finally points out that it is the key to its use to grasp the essence of a grammatical form.
