The Word Order of Verb and Adverbial Modifier Meaning 'Mutually' in Kam-Tai Languages

本文论证侗台语副词"互相"修饰动词的固有语序是"动词+相互",部分语言出现的"相互+动词"则是语言接触引发的"动词+相互>相互+动词"演变和变异的产物。触发这种演变和变异的模式语是汉语,而演变的机制既有"语法复制",也有语法借用。

This paper argues that the original word order of the adverb meaning ＂mutually＂ as a verbal modifier is ＂verb ＋ ＇mutually＇ ＂. The alternative word order of ＂＇mutually＇ ＋ verb＂ in some Kam-Tai languages is a product from the original, that is ＂verb ＋ ＇mutually＇＂ 〉 ＂＇mutually＇ ＋ verb＂, resulted from the change and evolution induced by language contact. The model language is Chinese, and the mechanism of change involves both ＂grammatical replication＂ and grammatical borrowing.
