Unseen Historicity in American Rhetorical Narrative Theory

摘要美国当代修辞性叙事理论由芝加哥学派第二代和第三代学者所创建和发展。20世纪70年代中后期以来,这一理论一直受到抨击,一些学者认为,跟第一代芝加哥学派所创建的诗学理论一样,它是无视历史语境的理论。实际上两者之间存在本质区别:第一代的诗学理论不具备历史化的潜能,而第二代和第三代的修辞理论则具有这种潜能,甚至有历史化的表述,只是由于种种原因被遮蔽。在揭示出修辞性叙事理论(潜在的)考虑历史语境的要求之后,我们就会发现,美国当代修辞性叙事理论实际上不仅重视文本,而且也或暗或明地提示出了考虑历史语境的重要性,在形式和历史之间达到了某种平衡。 American neo-Aristotelian rhetorical narrative theory has been developed by the second and third generations of Chicago School of Criticism. It has been widely believed that all three generations of the Chicago School share the preclusion of the consideration of historical context. But a careful examination of the relevant works by leading rhetorical theorists reveals that rhetorical narrative theory in effect has a historicizing requirement that has very much remained unseen for various reasons. This paper aims at revealing the implicit historicity in rhetorieal theory, with a discussion of why the historical requirement in the theory has been blocked from view.
