Nabokov often writes in a painterly way, or paints in a writerly way. This method can be approached in the following three ways. Firstly, numerous painters and paintings in his novels help mold characters and push forward story plots. Secondly, the author intentionally structures his story within the framework of a painting, letting the story imitate the scenes in paintings. Thus his novels often achieve the effect of "poetry within picture". Finally, Nabokov takes ideal writing and reading as a painting. He employs highly colorful words in his painterly writings. Picture in poetry, poetry in picture, poetry as picture--these aspects attest to the fact that Nabokov has always written by an ut picture poesis method.
