Exploration of the Ming Period Great Wall in Henan Province

在今山西省左权县、黎城县以及泽州县与河南省沁阳市、辉县市均发现有明代长城遗存。依据有关石匾、石碑和长城墙体形制及相关史料判断,此类遗存是明代嘉靖年间为防御蒙古族入侵河南,河南巡抚李宗枢新建或利用前代长城重建而成。除防御蒙古族进犯以外,这类设施也起到了检查过往行人、防止匪盗的作用。河南省明长城与九镇长城共同构成了明代的长城防御体系。

Remains of the Ming Period Great Wall have been discovered in Zuoquan, Licheng and Zezhou counties of Shanxi Province and in Qinyang and Huixian cities of Henan Province. Judged by the steles, horizontal inscribed stones as well as the wall form and relevant literal records, this great wall was built in the Jiajing Era of Ming Period in the direction by Henan Provincial Military Gover- nor Li Zongshu, with new walls structured and old works rebuilt in different sections. The construction had the purpose of defending Mongolian invasion, questioning the passers-by and dealing with bandit gang robberies. Joined to the Jiuzhen Great Wall, the Ming Period Henan Great Wall functioned as part of a complete defensive system.
