The oxidation of eight symmetric 1,2 - diaryl hydrazines by NOx absorbed in DMF solvent affords the corresponding azo compounds in high yield. since the condition are mild, the present procedure might be a better method for preparing azo compounds from hydrazines. It might also be an effective way to make waste gas (NOx) useful.
