Inheriting and Heralding: Modern Biographical Literature in Chinese Literary History

现代传记文学作为古典传记到当代传记之间的过渡,其对古典传记的继承与对当代传记的影响是不容忽视的。对史料的推崇、对史鉴功能的强调和对作品抒情性的注重是其承前的具体表现。而当代传记作品中涌现的数量可观的革命英雄和政治伟人传记、20世纪90年代以后出现的自传繁荣景象,以及当代传记创作对西方传记的借鉴,则是现代传记文学启后的直接体现。

As a bridge between classical and contemporary Chinese biography, modem biographical litera- ture plays noticeable roles in inheriting its predecessor and inspiring its successor. Its inheritance of classical biography consists in the emphasis on historical data, the advocacy of biography as a historical mirror and the preference for lyricism. Its inspiring of contemporary biography is reflected in the considerable number of bio- graphical works on revolutionary heroes and statesmen, the prosperity of autobiography after the 1990s, and the borrowing and imitation of Western biography in contemporary Chinese biographical works.
