The first excavation at Zhoujiazhuang, Jiangxian, Shanxi province was conducted in 2004 when a 76-square-metre area each in the south and north sections had been excavated. The remains date to the late Yangshao culture, the second phase of the Miaodigou culture or the Longshan culture, which would broaden understanding of these archaeological cultures. Surveys carried out before and after the excavation help to clarify cultural properties of the Zhoujiazhuang site and the distribution of remains. They indicate that remains from different cultural periods are found at different locations and their quantities vary greatly; cultural remains of Longshan exceed the other cultural remains in number and are widely scattered.
