This paper proposes a new planning method towards the ＇terroir＇ - a conception of a compound, every-changing urban field. The method is composed of the seed, structure and toolbox. The ＇seed＇ is a distinct complex assembly of neighborhood effects and constitutes a specific human ecology bound to the physical ＇structure＇ of the existing built fabric. These two form the baseline that allows us to develop a toolbox, containing both conceptual and technological tools. The paper uses the example of an urban design for Gothenburg to discuss and demonstrate the method. The method shows its capacity for contemporary cities and their determination for innovation and sustainability.
