ESL Picture Based Writing:Studies on its Critical Thinking with Case Analysis

批判思维在ESL写作中占有很重要的位置,但其在我国英语写作教学实践中的表现却不容乐观,"思辨缺席症"在英语写作教学中相当普遍。看图作文可以搭建起一个良好的思维平台、给学生预留充足的思维回旋空间、能充分调动学生思维活动,对提高学生的英语写作积极性、锻炼培养学生英语写作的思辨能力、克服"思辨缺席症"助一臂之力。这些不仅有图式理论、交际理论和认知理论作为依据,也有看图作文本身的案例解读作为支撑。

Important as critical thinking is to ESL writing, much less attention, however, has been paid to it in the actual pedagogical practice of English writing in our country, as the so-called ＂symptom of lacking critical thinking＂ is quite common in its teaching. Picture-based writing, by providing a suitable platform for the students to hatch up their ideas and opinions, and by increasing their initiatives to put down what they want to write about, has the potential to improve the students＇ thinking and to help over- come the ＂symptom of lacking critical thinking＂. The argument of this paper is supported not only by theo- ries such as the Schemata, the Communicative Approach, and the Cognitive Approach, but also by some case analysis of picture-based writing.
