Women Images in Classical Athenian Tragedies

古典时期的悲剧塑造了一批独立自主、反抗男性的女性,其言行颠覆了雅典社会饱含歧视的性别观念,但并未倡导一种更为平等的女性观。叛逆女性与现实中的雅典人一样,以消极观点看待自己的性别。在行为方式上,她们欺骗男性,施行巫术,毁灭家庭,令以男性为主的观众无法接受,几乎不可能对之产生同情,只会怀有恐惧与厌恶。因此,她们的反抗和自主只是一种表象,悲剧表达并维护的依然是歧视女性的性别观念。

A good number of independent and rebellious women images were created in classical Athenian tragedies, and their words and deeds subverted the gender ideas of the Athenian society, which was full of gender discrimination. However, they failed to advocate a real gender idea of equality. Those rebellious women, like the Athenians in real life, held a passive idea a- bout their own gender. When it came to their behaviors, they cheated men, practiced witchcraft, and destroyed families. Their behaviors could not be unaccepted by the androcentric audience and only aroused horror and disgust instead of sympathy. Thus the rebel and independence of the women images were only superficial and the classical Athenian tragedies expressed and safe- guarded a gender idea of discrimination.
