It is extremely crucial to determine the requirements motion compensation in practical design of airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Existing methods for determining the requirements only take into account one kind of motion error. We present a method for determining the requirements which take into account more than one kind of motion errors. Analytical equations of SAR motion compensation requiremetnt are derived which take into account the complicated azimuth motion errors, expressed as allowable maximum value of the mainlobe shift, quadratic phase error, cubic phase error and the integrated sidelobe ratio (ISLR). Eqs.(13) through (15) are the motion compensation requirements for constant velocity error and constant acceleration. Eqs.(13) and (21), those for constant velocity error and sinusoidal velocity error. Eqs.(24), (25) and (30), those for constant acceleration and sinusoidal velocity error. Eqs.(13), (14), (15) and (30), constant velocity error, constant acceleration and sinusoidal velocity error. A numerical example is given in Table 1. It shows that when complicated motion errors exist simultaneously, equations given in this paper is more suitable than those in Ref.[1].
