The Mystery of Heroism is a special work with great significance in Stephan Crane's literary career. Adapted from a short story in II Samuel, this story alludes to Crane's another profile besides his well-known naturalistic thought due to the in- verting narration. Taking the Civil War as the background, getting water as the main plot, Crane explored the human relations and that between human and nature profoundly, through which a brand-new heroism is born combined with free will and moral choice. This redefinition undoubtedly reflects the author's early humanistic thought and his unique human concern.
