Among the novelists of the Victorian age, Thomas Hardy is the master of using literature allusions ： biblical allusions, Greek mythologies and even works of other writers can be creatively applied to his own writing. The Return of the Native is Hardy＇s sixth novel, and it is a spectacular novel for its broad use of allusions and deep arrangement of content. The usage of allusions can not only add read- ing pleasure when the readers recognize their resources, it can also help the reader understand the deep meaning which the writer wants to express. Through the analysis of the structures of the archetypes and the methods of the displacement, Hardy＇s religious outlook hid- den in the novel becomes more overt.
