The habitus of Pecola, the protagonist in The Bluest Eye, reveals how the systematic and legitimate mainstream culture has shaped and dominated the self-definition and self-identity of the blacks. All aspects of their life are overwhelmingly influenced by the whites' aesthetic views and values via mass media, a vast range of propaganda tools, daily necessities and school education. Pecola's tragedy mirrors the tragedy of the African Americans who need to reconstruct their cultural identity, pursue their self-esteem, and recalibrate their aesthetic perception. Otherwise, they will continue to suffer the sinister cycle of mental slavery and exploitation
