The translations of Confucian Classics in foreign languages, especially the dozens of English versions of Lun Yu(The Analects),have contributed a lot to Sino-Western cultural exchange and communication. The first direct-English translation of Lun Yu in the world was finished by Joshua Marshman, published by the Serampore Mission Press in 1809,and entitled The Works of Confucius. This essay aims to explore the beginning of the English translation of Lun Yu,re-read Joshua Marshman's version of Lun Yu with a historical view, figuring out the intentional translation means and unique innovations in the text with the help of historical documents and archives, revealing its contributions to the cross-cultural communication between Western world and China in the history.
