Objective To study the change of cerebro spinal fluid(CSF) glutamate and nitric oxide (NO) levels in neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy(HIE), and explore the role of glutamate and NO in the pathogenesis of neonatal HIE and relationship between each other. Methods CSF glutamate and NO levels were studied in 24 newborn infants with HIE, and 8 neonates served as control. Results CSF glutamate and NO levels were much higher in newborn infants with the moderate and severe HIE when compared with the control group and mild HIE; glutamate levels were significantly related to NO levels. Conclusion Glutamate and NO are significant to the pathogenesis of neonatal HIE.
