In 2005, Shi participated in a folk art festival hosted for people who lived in the area of the Three Gorges project. Shi submitted two embroideries, one of which earned her an award. That work was auctioned for 400 yuan （US $63,50）. That was the first time Shi realized she could earn money by embroidering.
