As I entered the studio of OBRA Architects at 315 Church Street in New York City a couple of months ago, I was immediately struck by the ambience of a craftsman's workshop, suggested by countless study models in various materials, ranging from the size of a matchbox to huge structural, interior and detail studies. The models instantly spoke of an intensity, physicality and intimacy of their approach as compared with the commonly clinical air of today's architectural offices that resemble a lawyer's practice more than a place of work that is engaged with human existence and life world. The OBRA studio reflects personal dedication, and a deep interest in the essence of the art of architecture instead of regarding design as a mere professional service. Talking with the architects and reading their texts made me understand that for them making architecture is also a mode of personal introspection, and a way of cultivating their own character and world view. As Ludwig Wittgenstein suggests, "Architecture and philosophy are similar ... they are both ways of working on oneself ... on one's way of seeing things"?
