Freedom Park rests on a hill summit, surrounded by a park of native trees and bushes. As visitors ascend a spiral path, the Witness Memorial and Freedom Museum are gradually revealed in constantly shifting perspectives. Inspired by the African tradition of carving the graves of important community members from a Baobab trunk, the womb-like Memorial and Museum echo hollowed-out tree trunks. The Memorial, a single "trunk" set in a clearing of indigenous sugarbush trees, honors apartheid victims. The Museum is configured as four soaring "trunks" containing ten gallery spaces that can be traversed in sequence as if fused into one, just as trees in close proximity grow into one.
