During the Edo Period in Japan, there has been a large number of novels adapted from Chinese counterparts written in classical Chinese or vernacular Chinese in the dynasties of Ming and Qing. Novels adapted from Chinese supernatural legends constitute a great part in Japanese early - modern mystery novels, to the extent that it has become an important feature of Japanese early - modern mystery literature. Chinese supernatural legends have a deep and wide impact on Japanese early - modern literature, but owing to the differences of cultural background in two countries, various trans- formations have appeared during the process of translation and adaption. These adapted novels retain the mysteriousness of supernatural legends, and at the same time Japanese local customs are integrated. So they are the perfect combination of Chinese classics and Japanese culture.
