The guqin is a kind of musical instrument that has a lot to do with an emperor running the state and a gentleman' s character cultivation. After its introduction to Japan by the Kentoushi, it became a part of the Japanese ideology of community and harmony. The emperor and princes of Japan played the guqin themselves. However, after the disappearance of the musical skills required to play the guqin, a legend emerged suggesting that the guqin was a symbol of female nobility. The paper explores the origin of this legend and its effect on the later literature by investigating the monogatari of the Heian period of Japan.
