London was the first city to host the Olympic Games for the third time and legacy was at the forefront of thinking of everyone involved. The global architecture specialist Populous progressed a new theory of"embracing the temporary", challenging the concept of building permanence, both with its design of the Olympic stadium and its involvement in the Games Overlay, ensuring all buildings used were fit for Olympic purpose. The result was the environmentally sustainable Olympic stadium ever built, capable of transformation afterwards into a much smaller venue. Many other Olympic venues were temporary, providing the flexibility to stage sport at famous London landmarks, while ensuring a sustainable legacy with no architectural"white elephants".
