Objective To study the maintaining of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills of clinical nurses after having CPR training and to find out the optimal retraining time interval between two CPR trainings for them. Methods CPR training was conducted among 80 nurses randomly selected from 8 clinical departments. The theory and practice of CPR skills were evaluated and compared before and right after, three months, six months and twelve months after, the initial training according to the 2010 American Heart Association guidelines for CPR. The assessment panel was composed by veteran su- pervisor nurses. Results The performance of CPR skills is lowest before the training and highest right after the training. Six months after the initial training, the performance decreased Significantly compared with that of right after training (P 〈 0.05), and the operating skills decreased to the level of before training. Twelve months after CPR training, the theory and practice performance decreased further, and had no significant difference compared with that of before training. As to the emergency nurses, the performances of before, 6 months and 12 months after the initial training were better than that of other depart- ments nurses. The performance of 6 months after training was not different from that of right after the training. Twelve months after CPR training, the theory and practice performance decreased significantly compared with that of right after training (P 〈 0.05), and the operating skills of 12 months after the training decreased to the level of before training. Conelusion The best frequency of CPR training for nurses should be set up according to the features of the various medical departments. 3-6 months may be a considered interval for most of the clinical departments, 6-12 months may be suitable for emergency department.
