On the Entertaining Tendency of Popular Novels during tile Late Qing Dynasty and Early Nationalist Period

清末民初的通俗小说家表现出超然型的创作心态，更重视小说的“情”和“趣”，更关注小说的娱世功能。他们的娱乐主义文学观与世俗化价值取向同生共存，既是对通俗小说艺术特性的尊重，又是对接受者的尊重。他们在适应读者阅读需求方面进行了诸多努力和探索，丰富了通俗小说的表现技巧，增强了作品的艺术感染力，使通俗小说获得了前所未有的大普及。

The popular novelists during the late Qing dynasty and early Nationalist period exhibited a super creative condition. They paid more attention to the 'emotional appeal and 'fun' of the novels and their entertaining functions as well. This approach of entertaining co- existed with the secular value orientation. It conformed to the artistic features of the popular novel and showed concem for the receiver. They made great efforts and did much experimental work to cater to the needs of the readers, thus enriching the expressive techniques and enhancing the artistic appeal of the popular novel, which caned its unprecedented popularization.
