The author discusses the current situation with regard to farmland in China, the relationship between the farmland system and economic efficiency, the reasons for disparities in the farmland system, and several basic elements that have to be taken into consideration in the forthcoming reform of the farmland system. The author places particular emphasis on the balance between efficiency, justice and social stability in the formation of the existing farmland system, and points out the standards for the design of a new farmland system by the government.
