中国现代文学语言的形成大致经历了以下几个步骤：首先是西学东渐后在版章书刊中涌现的翻译语汇和新造字词，然后是开明思想家和政治家对白话文的积极尝试，接着是五四新文化运动对白话文的大规模提倡，最后是一代代作家的创作使白话文学作品成为二十世纪中国文学的主流。

The evolution of modern language of Chinese literature went through the following four stages: at first interpretive vocabulary and new words appeared largely after the gradua eastwardness of western learning; then the vernaeular was attempted actively by those enlightened thinkers and politicians and pro- moted later on in large scale by May Fourth Move- ment: finally veravular literature works turned into the main stream of Chinese literature in 20th Century.
