Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradaw is one of the representatives of Islamic moderation, he believes that moderation exists between idealism and materialism, between idealism and realism, between rationalism and sentimentalism, between individualism and collectivism, between fossilization and development; moderation is a perfect balance of material and spirit, rights and duty, classic text and personal interpretation, persisting in tradition and looking forward to future. From a western perspective, this article offers an introduction to the life of Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradaw, his religious position, and his ideas of Islamic moderation and of the western world.
