Hu Shi's Studies of the Western Drama

胡适在留学期间阅读和观赏了近百部西方戏剧,他的日记包含不少有价值的介绍和评论,他在相关论著中的论述非常深刻;他对《哈姆莱特》的研究颇有力度,触及该剧的舞台布景、性格塑造、独白、演出效果等;他对问题剧特别关心,深入研究了易卜生的现实主义、个人主义等,在当时产生了巨大的影响;他还对三一律、悲剧等展开了讨论;他的不少观点都是开创性的,值得仔细研究。

Hu Shi had read （or watched） nearly 100 Western plays during his days studying in America, with a lot of valuable information and comments in his diary, which were developed into more mature ideas in his later essays and works; he spent much time on Hamlet, focusing on scenery, characteriza- tion, monologues, performance effect, etc; he paid a lot of attention to the problem plays, concentrating on Ibsen＇s realism and individualism, which made him very influential then; he also discussed Three U- nities, tragedies etc; many of his ideas are very creative, calling for careful studies.
