In the 21^st century, coal - tar pitch industry was not substitutability in coal chemical industry. The present status and problems in the basic research and process development of coal tar were analyzed. A detailed analysis and introduction of the technical development of coal tar was emphasized, and its prospect was also briefly described. Future coal tar industry should seize the opportunity to develop in the centralization, finely separation, further processing and new material synthesis, only then coal tar industry comprehensive strength and economic benefit can be promoted.
