A Commentary on Li Dongyang

李东阳是明朝中期内阁首辅,既是诗人,更是政治人物,但政治上颇具争议。其虽也有一些作为,但没有砥柱中流的本领,不是救时的宰相,只能依附强力人物,与时浮沉。虽其品德清廉,守住了为人、为官的底线,不是助纣为虐的奸臣,更没有主动害人、乱政,虽与刘瑾等同流却没有合污,但其对正德年间朝纲紊乱却要负有主要责任。因此他不是一个合格的内阁首辅。

LI Dongyang was both a poet and a premier in the middle period of the Ming dynasty. There were controversies over his political stand. He did some good things but could not become a pil-lar of the society. He followed some powerful officials and went with the tide. He had a good morality either as a man or an official and never helped the wicked ministers like Liu Jin to do harm to others or to the government. He was not a qualified premier because he was responsible for the turbulence of the imperial court in the Zhengde Period.
