The importance and characteristics of energy conversion efficiency were expounded. The comparison of energy conversion rate should be based on the same feed and product. Whether it is important for comparison of the energy conversion rate data from different plants was discussed： in some cases it is important, while in some cases it is not necessary; the reason why the demonstration plants stipulate the lowest energy conversion rates was explained; it is put forward that it is inappropriate to take the energy conversion rate as the only criterion; the most important principle for selecting a product is the national demand and technology maturity.
