The short story To Room Nineteen depicts a modern intellectual woman who has feminine consciousness and a strong desire for authentic self and freedom. In the end, she fails and commits suicide in the Room Nineteen. According to the theories proposed by Friedan in her book The Feminine Mystique, it is obvious to conclude that the reason for Susan＇ s tragedy is the feminine mystique propagated by the gociety and media, which promotes that the true feminine fulfillment is playing the role as a wife and mother. In addition, it prompts people to introspect how women can escape from the entrapment of feminine mvstiaue.
