Abstraction and materialization in translation between English and Chinese

英语具有抽象性的倾向,汉语具有具体性的倾向,这是由思维方式的差异和语言文字特点所决定的。译者在进行翻译活动时,应考虑到英汉语言这一差异,灵活采用"化实为虚"或者"化虚为实"翻译策略,以达到良好的翻译效果。

The paper attempts to discuss one of the characteristics of English and Chinese： English has the tendency of being abstract while Chinese being concrete, which is determined by the difference of mode of thinking and writing form. Therefore, while translating, the translator should consider the difference between English and Chinese into consideration, and flexibly adopt the translation strategies of transforming the concrete into the abstract or transforming the abstract into the concrete so as to achieve good translation effect.
