This essay is a discursive attempt to interrogate the meaning of the term "democracy" and to locate its possible application in music classrooms. Inspired by John Dewey's 26-month visit to China, and building upon the profound rela- tionship between China and Teachers College Columbia University, the authors wish to reignite interest in democratic educa- tion and to restart intercultural dialogue around the place and purpose of tradition and innovation in music education. Finding limited value in the etymological origin of the term "democracy" ( Greek: demokratia), the authors reinterpret the concept in reference to Chinese and Anglophone renderings. Rather than offering an absolute or accurate definition, we play with the multiple renderings of the term with the hope of enlarging our understanding of democracy and its practical use in formal music education settings.
