Environmentalism and Allegory in Zhang Wei’s Novels

Since the mid-1980s, an increasing number of literary works focus on environmental issues, conveying the authors＇ nostalgia for nature anti repulsion for commercialism and industrialization. Among these, Zhang Wei presents envin）nmental ideas in his fictions by employing imaginative allegorical narratives, Chinese myths, folklore, legends, anti Taoist and Confucian eoncepts. The Song of Hedgehog employs imaginative, unique allegorical narratives of hyhridity and promutes environmenlal ideas based on Chinese traditional thoughts and on a profound, romantic love for nature. This paper will delineate Zhang＇s ideas about nature and environmentalism with detailed description of the allegorical narratives and traditional elements in his novels September Allegory anti The Song of Hedgehog.
