Based on Walter Benjamin's city portraits,the paper concentrates on nineteenth-century Paris.It first investigates the rise,developm entanddeclineoftheflneurduring the modernization of the city of Paris marked by the urban renewal.It then makes a detailed study of the relationship b etweentheflneur and the various important subjects that appeared at each stage in the modernization of Paris.Nineteenthcentury Paris incarnates modernity,which is then observed critically by t heflneurwholivesinsidethe city of Paris as an urban native from a distance.Through the eyesofthetransientflneur,we not only behold the history and modernity of nineteenth-century European capitalism which has been engraved on the city of Paris as the representative of capitalist metropolises,but also detect the truth of modernization of the city of Paris.
