作为一个自由主义者及教育家,蔡元培认为教育的目的在于使受教育者"尚自然,展个性","养成完全人格",成为一个自由的人,同时教育本身也必须是自由的。现实中,他提倡思想自由和学术自由,争取教育平等和教育独立,努力为教育争自由。可以说,对自由的追求贯穿于蔡元培一生的教育思想与教育实践。

As a liberalist and educator, Cai Yuan - pei＇s pursuit for freedom had been embodied throughout his lifetime educational thought and practice. He believes that the purpose of education is to make the educated ＂ develop their personality and advocate na- ture＂ ,＂ develop completely personality＂ , and become a free man. And this kind of education itself also must be of freedom. Therefore, he advocated the freedom of thought, academic freedom ; fighting for equality in education and independent education, and his aim was to struggle for the freedom of education.
