1931年,耶鲁大学从牛津大学与剑桥大学汲取了住宿学院制度的思想,由此产生了一个使耶鲁大学本科教育发生根本改变的发展计划,即住宿学院系统。住宿学院的重点不在"住宿",而在"学院",主要是由教师与学生组成的一个小型学术社区,本质上是一个特殊的学术部门。住宿学院所提供的各种教育资源,在耶鲁大学本科生的学术成长过程中发挥着重要的、特殊的作用。

In 1931, Yale University borrowed the idea of Residential College System from Oxford and Cambridge, resulting in a development plan that foundamentally changes its undergraduate educa- tion the residential college system. The core of this system is not the residential part but the col- lege, which is essentially a small academic community composed of teachers and students. All the ed- ucational resources offered there have played a special and important role in the academic growth of the undergraduates.
