In A Summer Bird-cage, Margaret Drabble reveals that Sarah, a representative of young in- tellectual women, tries shaking off the shackles of traditional customs based on man＇s culture to achieve her independent identity. The image of home goes through the whole novel. Woman would like to go away from the traditional home, and build up one＇s own with the ideal plan. However, it is impossible for her to reach the aim. Any possible way, always cold and confusing, cannot lead to the virtual home. Woman can escape from the doom by no means, no matter how hard she struggles.
