在浪漫主义高举想象旗帜之后,罗蒂进一步肯定了想象的作用。罗蒂把想象视为一种创造隐喻的官能。利用想象局部新创的隐喻,把不同领域的对象或事件重新描述一番,不仅可以实现"自我"创造,还能够实现公共"团结"。不过,想象并不是取理性而代之的另一个不变"核心",而只是一种可以有效规避理性的负面作用、更好地实现"诗化"乌托邦的官能。它在和平繁荣的环境下,不断发挥作用,使人类的未来更加丰富多彩。

Imagination,after its rise in Romantic period,is playing a more important role in Rorty＇s thinking.Rorty defines imagination as a faculty of creating metaphor and argues that it can realize self creation and public ＂solidarity＂ by a redescription of various objects and incidents with its newly created metaphor.Imagination is yet not another kernel which takes the place of reason but a faculty which can achieve poetic utopia.It can devote itself to making our life more energetic and colorful under the peaceful and prosperous environments.
