Quintessence Retained after Transmigration:Comments on the New Version of Jude the Obscure

译文在基本内容上要忠于原文。当代语言学就语言的结构而言,将语言界定为"符号系统"。那么,英语是英语的符号系统,汉语是汉语的符号系统。因此翻译要在结构上追求对等,是根本做不到的。翻译只能是"译意"。本文根据钱钟书先生的"化境"说、以及当代翻译理论,认真阅读了《无名的裘德》三种译本。通过对比,笔者以为最新一个译本较为接近化境。

The translation should be faithful to the original in contents. The modern linguistics, based on structuralism defines language＇ as a system of signs. Then the Chinese language differs materially from the English language in structure. So it is out Of the question to ensure the translation to be equal to the original in structure. What we can do is just to translate the meaning. Basing himself on the sublimation suggested by Mr. Qian Zhongshu, and some modern translation theories, the author of the present paper has studied three Chinese versions of Jude the Obscure. And after careful comparison, the author comes to the conclusion the most recently published one is the almost next door to the sublimation.
