The two core concepts of Iris Murdoch are "the good art" and "free characters". She thinks that a good novel must be a house fit for free characters to live in, and the essence of "the good art" lies in its capacity to combine form with a respect for reality with all its odd contingent ways. Under the Net, The Black Prince, The Book and the Brotherhood depicting human relations ranging from simple ones to complex ones respectively represent Iris Murdoch's literary achievement in her early, intermediate and later writing careers. The paper concludes that Iris Murdoch constructs her houses by interweaving complex relationships among her characters.
