On the Achievements and Status of Liu Yongfu's Defending Taiwan Against Japanese Aggression

刘永福在保卫台湾,抗击日本侵略势力的斗争中立下了不朽功勋。在反割台斗争中,他是留在台湾的清朝最高官员,战场上的全权总指挥;他制定了抗日保台的战略方针,在战场上给予日军沉重打击。虽然,他没有能够坚持到抗日斗争的最后,但在这场中国近代史上最为壮烈的民族斗争中,他站在了斗争的最前线,为抵御外来入侵,保卫祖国领土完整战斗竭尽全力,是中国近代杰出的民族英雄。

Liu Yongfu had achieved immortal feats in the struggle of defending Taiwan against invading Japanese forces. He was the highest official of the Qing Dynasty who stayed in Taiwan and the sole commander on the battlefield against ceding Tai- wan. He worked out strategies of guarding Taiwan and gave Japanese army a heavy blow on the battlefield. He could not stick to the end of the anti-Japan struggle, however, in that most heroic national struggle in modem Chinese history, he stayed in the forefront of the war, made all his efforts to fight against foreign invasion and safeguard the territorial integrity of the motherland. He was an outstanding national hero in modem China.
