OUTLINE / After 122 years' disappearance at Covent Garden,a new production of Meyerbeer's Robert le citable returned to the stage in December 2012.Unfortunately, direction and costume design by Laurent Pelly didn't add any luster to this once-beloved,now-forgotten work.Instead, he created a whole stage of chaos and absurdity.Fortunately Daniel Oren's conducting was as great as ever;principal singers,including Bryan Hymel,Patrizia Cfofi,John Relyea, Marina Poplavskaya,Jean-Francois Borras,and the chorus were impressive.Overall,the production was certainly worth a glimpse but perhaps not wortliy of revival any time soon.The only thing that rescued the audience from four hours of absurdity was the expert singing.
