An Analysis of the Status of Mrs. Gan Based on Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms

甘夫人是刘禅的生母,刘备的夫人。《三国志》明确记载甘夫人为刘备的妾,罗贯中在《三国志通俗演义》中对于甘夫人的身份的交代比较含糊,是妻还是妾没有明说。本文结合史书对《三国志通俗演义》中甘夫人的身份进行辨析,明确其身份为妻,并对成因做出简要分析,对于解读小说大有裨益。

Mrs. Gan is in author’s opinion both the birth mother of Liu Shan, the second emperor of Kingdom of Shu, and the wife of Liu Bei, the founder of Kingdom of Shu. But according to nether Records of the Three Kingdoms, nor the ambiguous description from Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong, it is not able to confirm whether Mrs. Gan is Liu Bei’ s wife or not. In this essay, however, after studying numerous historical records and sources, the author is going to verify her identity as the wife of Liu Bei in the works of Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms and to give adequate evidence to support this judgment, which may be later of benefit to readers.
