The important pictures painted by the 19th century French painter Moreau share a distinctive feature: Although the subject matter often comes from traditional myth, history and literature, the pictures are quite different from the old paintings featuring mystery and obscurity and often filled with mysterious visual symbols. That is why Moreau is known as a "symbolist". The paper starts with the gender image reflected in his pictures, and analyzes social psychology and individual consciousness behind the nictures to understand the cultural elements that form the complexity of his paintings.
